What the battery rebate is?

This is a federal incentive that reduces the upfront cost of installing a behind‑the‑meter battery (typically paired with rooftop solar) via tradable certificates, similar in practice to STCs.

The rebate provides about $311–$336 per usable kWh, capped at the first 50 kWh (up to ~$15,500–$17,600 max), for batteries from 5–100 kWh capacity. It started in mid-2025 via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, with batteries needing Clean Energy Council approval and connection to rooftop solar (under 100 kW).

Changes in 2026

From May 2026, STCs apply tiered rates to the first 50 usable kWh:

  • 0–14 kWh: 100% of the STC factor.

  • 14–28 kWh: 60%.

  • 28–50 kWh: 15%.
    Eligibility stays the same: batteries 5–100 kWh paired with rooftop solar under 100 kW, CEC-approved, no prior SRES aid.

Eligible systems: Battery capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh, installed with a new or existing compliant rooftop PV system.

Eligible customers: Homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities; it is not income‑tested at the federal level, and you can claim one battery per electricity meter (multiple properties can each qualify).

The rebate is effectively delivered through certificates handled by the installer, who discounts your quote and then trades the certificates, so you see the benefit as an upfront discount rather than a later cash payment.
